 2018 Preview

South Lamar completed the 2017 season with a 10-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region five, the Stallions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. South Lamar made a nice playoff run in 2017, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Pickens County team by the score of 35-7.

The Stallions won as many games as in any season since 2004.

Since 2010, South Lamar has gone a combined 35-54. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, South Lamar has managed to compile a record of 141-131. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 1A and 160th in the AHSAA.

The Stallions are led by head coach Clay Gilliam who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-9 over the past two seasons at South Lamar. Under his direction the Stallions have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gilliam.

Coach Gilliam's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 16-9 (64.0%).

The South Lamar Stallions will play in Class 1A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Stallions remain in 1A but move from region five over to region six. The Stallions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 67-48 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 1A and 49th in the AHSAA.

The Stallions should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

The Stallions open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Lamar County on Friday, August 24 at J.C. McAdams Field. Last year the Lamar County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 8-5 and in second place in Class 2A region eight. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Lanett by a score of 48-7.

South Lamar and Lamar County have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Stallions have a 20-19-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with South Lamar winning by a score of 40-19.

South Lamar returns 1A All-State  athlete Buster Griffin. He was named to the second team last season. The Stallions also return  offensive lineman Grant Williams. He was named to the second team. The Stallions also return  defensive back Jarrett Bryant. He was named to the second team.
